Theatre Work - The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew at the Hampton Hill Playhouse

By Shakespeare; Directed by Elizabeth Lattimore and Sarah Dowd

21st-24th April 2010

This version of Taming was set in the 1960's, and therefore the set design was a recreation of a colourful and hip London street in the '60's! I was asked to paint a huge backdrop of Carnaby Street, and I didn't realise quite how huge it would be until I saw that the canvases filled the backdrop of the stage! Here are a few photos of my progress - you can see in the second one just how big it is compared to me. I started with the sky and worked down, using the basis of the street sketched from a projection, and afterwards working from a printout.

I also helped direct some of the other things that were going on, such as the painting of the flats on the left to look like a brick house, and using paint and sponges to weather the brick wallpaper used to create the building on the right.
